Deepika Padukone had a silent year 2009.

Deepika Padukone had a silent year 2009.

Deepika had a very quite and silent year in 2009. Deepika Padukone, the daughter of International Badminton player Prakash Padukone, was born on 5th January, 1986. She accomplished her studies from Mount Carmel College in Australia and pursued her career as a super model. She had modeled for famous Indian brands like Limca, Dabur Lal Powder, Close Up Toothpaste and Liril.

She won the Model of the Year award at the Kingfisher Fashion Awards, became one of the models for Kingfisher Swimsuit Calender 2006 and won two awards at the Idea Zee Fashion awards. She became the brand ambassador of Kingfisher Airlines, Levi Strauss, Tissot SA. After impressing the judges of the modeling world she featured in private album Aap Ka Suroor of Himesh Reshamiya. She got one of the biggest breaks of her life in Farah Khan’s film Om Shanti Om.

She astonished the viewers of bollywood films with her all round performance in the film Om Shanti Om which was the first film of her life. Farah Khan’s film ended up being the greatest blockbuster of the year and created a room for Deepika Padukone to be a super star. She acted in a double role, one having an old background with the name Shantipriya, while the other Sandy having similarity with the looks of Shantipriya. The success of the film with the brilliant performance of superstar Shahrukh Khan created the spirit where Deepika Padukone had a greater challenge of balancing the standard in her following films.

Her next film Bachna Aye Haseeno, opposite Ranbir Kapoor created sensation as well. Deepika acted opposite Bipasha Basu and Minissha Lamba. So she had the additional challenge of balancing their beauty with her own screen presence. Some way or the other she stood out as the leading actress of the film and the film became super hit. The songs “sazde”, “bachna aye haseeno”, etc., composed by Vishal Shekhar became super hit.

But 2009 had been a silent year. Her film Chadni Chowk To China opposite Akshay Kumar flopped. The other film Love Aaj Kal opposite Saif Ali Khan did mediocre business. She has a challenge of giving a hit film very soon before her image is forgotten. The viewers expect her to bounce back in style.

Sanjay Dutt was unparallel in the film All The Best.

Sanjay Dutt was unparallel in the film All the Best.

Sanjay Dutt was unparallel in the film All the Best. Whenever the viewers have thought about him they had cultivated an action image with him. He was successful in films like Sadak, Aatish, Kurukshetra,
Daag-the Fire, Vaastav, etc. , which were action-pact films.

These days his image in comedy films had amazed the viewers. He had already shown his excellence in comedy films in the film Munna Bhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munnabhai. The film All the Best also showed his brilliance in this form of acting.

He came to stay in Fardeen Khan’s house in the film All the Best, just because his flight got late and he required a halt of 4 hours. But when he came to his house he got the wrong image of Bipasha Basu being the wife of Fardeen Khan instead of Ajay Devgan.

Besides he faced the person who had paid rent for the house and came to live there, and also Johnny Lever’s men who came to his house to collect their dues. Sanjay Dutt went on slapping one person after the other, but did it with witty flavor.

Sanjay Dutt played the drums to perfection when Ajay Devgan, Fardeen Khan and their team played music in Goa under a band. Their drummer was absent and Sanjay Dutt filled the gap. He was brilliant in the comedy sequences relating to the maid servant of the house as well.

In the last few years, whenever Sanjay Dutt had acted in comedy films like Dhamaal or Shaadi No. 1., the films ended up being hits. The film All The Best also got a great opening. It will be a hit in the long run.

The viewers expect Sanjay Dutt to continue to show his versatility in acting in the years to come.

All the best got a good opening.

All the best got a good opening.

To the amazement of most of the viewers of bollywood films, the film All the best got a brilliant opening, when released on the same date with the film Blue and Mr. Aur Mrs Khanna. Most of the viewers thought that the other two films would have got a greater opening.

In this film Sanjay Dutt had been shown as a businessman in London. His brother Fardeen Khan always wanted money from Sanjay Dutt. Sanjay Dutt did not marry anyone but pretended to have married Mugdha Godse.

Ajay Devgan was a dealer of cars. He was married to Bipasha Basu. Due to financial debts both Ajay Devgan and Sanjay Dutt borrowed money from the local gangstar Johnny Lever. From there the problems of both the gentlemen started.

The rest of the film was related to the story of how the two individuals Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgan managed to face Johnny Lever in relation to their debts. The film had been directed by Rohit Shetty. Ajay Devgan produced the film along with acting in it.

The character actors and actresses in the film did exceeding well including Asrani, Mukesh Tiwari, Ashwini Kalsekar, Sanjay Mishra, to name a few. Pritam had composed the music of the film and one of the songs titled “All the best” had already become a hit.

There are two reasons for the success of the film All the best over Blue and other films. One reason is that the lives of most of the middle-class Indians had been stressed out. They find relief in seeing comedy films over other types of films. So action films and romantic films do not have the same market as comedy films.
The other factor had been the combination of Rohit Shetty with Ajay Devgan and other group of actors. He had used them in Golmaal which was a hit, and therefore knew how to make the best use of their acting talent.

Ranbir Kapoor was very impressive in Bacchna Aye Haseeno.

Ranbir Kapoor was very impressive in Bacchna Aye Haseeno.

Ranbir Kapoor, being the son of superstar Rishi Kapoor and grandson of Showman Raj Kapoor had a lot to prove when he made his debut with the film Sawaariya. The beginning was not that brilliant if compared with Rishi Kapoor’s Bobby.

But Ranbir Kapoor bounced back with his majestic performance in the film Bacchna Aye Haseeno. The story of the young man getting involved with three girls namely Minissha Lamba, Bipasha Basu and Deepika Padukone. He almost cheated Minisha Lamba after spending a night with her in Switzerland and did not marry Bipasha knowing her to be a grand model.

But in the case of Deepika Padukone, he loved her and wanted to marry her inspite of knowing that she was a taxi-driver in Sydney. But later on Deepika herself realized that she loved Ranbir and decided to marry him at last. It was difficult to match the elegance of the three actresses Minisha Lamba, Bipasha Basu and Deepika Padukone in the film, but Ranbir Kapoor did it in style.

But the portion where Ranbir Kapoor went back to India to say sorry to Minisha and Bipasha, was very appealing. He showed the signs of a matured actor and had lot of similarity in dialogue throwing with Rishi Kapoor. He worked as servant of Bipasha to show that he was repentant about his own act. He showed the exuberance of a young man and also the calmness of a person who realizes and feels his mistakes made in life.

The music of Vishal Shekhar was classic, with hit songs like “khuda jain”, “ahista ahista”, “bacchna aye haseeno”, etc. Ranbir Kapoor has all the signs of a popular star and viewers can expect him to carry on the legacy of Raj Kapoor and Prithviraj Kapoor, along with Kareena Kapoor.

Ranbir Kapoor had shown in Bacchna Aye Haseeno that he can dance, he is equipped to play the role of characters who are born and brought up abroad. The viewers are looking forward to his performance in the new film Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahaani in 2009.

Urbanized youths like characterless girls.

Urbanized youths like characterless girls.

Urbanized youths in the last few years had shown their affinity towards characterless girls who used to be considered as vamps or villains in the 60s and 70s. That is the reason why actresses like Bipasha Basu have equal popularity like Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor or Aishwarya Rai.

The urbanized men of this age had given up the idea of looking for wives who are god-fearing, docile, feminine which are exhibited in different films by Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor, Ash, etc. Instead they want aggressive girls like Bipasha Basu of No Entry.

Had Bipasha Basu appeared during the 60s, the characters played by her in films like Ajnabee or No Entry, would not have added her popularity. She would have been stamped the villain identity like Nadira and faced problems in getting positive roles.

But the recent trend is different. Both Katrina Kaif and Bipasha Basu acted in the same film Race. While Katrina showed her docile image, the same way as she had shown in films like Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya, or Partner, Bipasha showed her aggressive image which suits males better than women. While both the girls were crooked and playing games, Katrina’s style of execution of her character had more feminine attribute than that of Bipasha Basu. But at the end of the film her style icon image got more appreciation from the viewers due to the new tastes of urbanized youths.

Even in Ajnabee, Kareena Kapoor had a more docile image than that of Bipasha Basu. Bipasha Basu along with Akshay Kumar created a false case relating to the death of Bipasha Basu and implicated Bobby Deol for the murder. At the end of the film the truth relating to the murder mystery was unveiled and Bipasha Basu was killed. In No Entry Bipasha’s image of club dancer haunted the viewers more than sweet and feminine Lara Dutta.

Even Aishwarya Rai impressed the viewers with her docile performance in the film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Taal. But the same viewers hailed Ash with her negative image in the film Dhoom 2 opposite Hrithik Roshan.

The producers and directors should take into account the tastes of viewers of different age groups for selecting the different actors and actresses in new films.

Review of Dhoom 2.

Review of Dhoom 2.

Dhoom 2 was a film released few years back. Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai were cast in negative roles. So the producers and directors took a huge risk in giving negative roles to romantic actors and actresses of the stature of Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai.

Hrithik Roshan was an international thief. Most of his operations were done with very high quality of high-tech power. He was a master of disguises. In many operations he took make ups which compelled viewers to think that he had been statutes of museums.

Abhishek Bacchan was given the responsibility of arresting Hrithik Roshan that it was proved that Hrithik was smarter than the cops. Aishwarya Rai was the other thief who entered into a partnership with Hrithik Roshan for committing stealing operations.

Abhishek Bacchan was well supported by Bipasha Basu who also took police training. Both of them had affair and worked together to arrest Hrithik and Aishwarya. When they confronted each other, Hrithik fell from a cliff and made the police believe that he had died. But he escaped and lived a new life with Aishwarya Rai in another part of the world.

But Abhishek Bacchan arrested Hrithik Roshan at the end of the film when he found him serving in hotel industry. He did not put Hrithik behind bars as he informed him about the place where the stolen property was kept. The music of the film was super hit. All the songs in the film became extremely popular including the songs “crazy kiya re”, “dhoom machale”, “my name is ali”, etc.

The romantic locations all across the world including sunny beaches added attraction for the viewers. Bipasha Basu’s exposure in the film as usual pulled lot of crowds to the halls. Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai’s online chemisty made the viewers speechless.

Dhoom 2 did even greater business than Dhoom. Dhoom 2 even brought back the box-office of Aishwarya Rai who did not hit films in the preceding years before Dhoom 2. The film once again proved that Hrithik Roshan was a genius. His charishmatic endeavours were too good for Indian audience who were not used to see Hollywood performances.

Deepika Padukone has a real challenge ahead.

Deepika Padukone has a real challenge ahead.

She had a double role in the film which was based on reincarnation. Shahrukh Khan also played a double role and created history with his entertaining performance. The music of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy was superlative and the songs contributed a lot in the success of the film.

The film also had the dream sequence with the song “om shanty om” where actors like Dharmender, Jeetender, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Lara Dutta, Rekha, Shabana Azmi, Priyanka Chopra, etc., gave lips. The other songs “tumko paya hai to”, “ankho me teri ajab si ajab si adayein hai”, etc. The dancing capabilities of Deepika Padukone was also exposed in the song “din tana na na na”, where images of Sunil Dutt, Jeetender, Rajesh Khanna were superimposed.

If Om Shanti Om was a dream for Deepika Padukone, the next film Bacchna Aye Haseeno was also after mirth. She was one of the girls other than Bipasha Basu and Minissha Lamba who had involvement with Ranbir Kapoor in the film and changed his life. This film also had exotic locations, melodious music of Vishal Shekhar. The songs “bacchna aye haseeno”, “ki mujhe pyar hai” had created waves in the minds of the viewers after the release of the film.

If the awards of Deepika Padukone in the form of Best Debutant under the Filmfare Awards and box-office success of the two films are separated Deepika will face reality for the first time with the film Chandni Chowk to China. Akshay Kumar will act opposite her in the film.

The film is going to be released this year itself and it has both comedy and action. Akshay Kumar had been shown as a cook who will learn martial art and show his skills in China. By this period of time Deepika Padukone’s glamour had been acknowledged by the viewers and the critics.

But her acting capability is still under introspection. In Chandni Chowk to China and the following films like Production No. 1, her acting performance will be scanned and if she succeeds she will be following the gharana of Aishwarya Rai, Sushmita Sen, Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta and others who had come from the fashion world and took bollywood films by storm. In that sense her real challenge is ahead.

Bipasha Basu and style statement.

Bipasha Basu and style statement.

Bipasha Basu in the last few years had been considered as the style icon of bollywood films. Initially she started her career with bold performances in films like Ajnabee. She acted in negative character opposite Akshay Kumar, which other actresses would have declined to do in the early part of their career.

She took up the challenge of playing the role of call girls which hardly any actress would have liked to take up. Her performance in the film No Entry involves one of such a kind of role where the character was central one. She had lured Anil Kapoor and Fardeen Khan and that had led to misunderstanding with their wives Lara Dutta and Celina Jaitley, respectively. It was solved at the end of the film by Salman Khan. Bipasha’s stylish lips in the song “no entry” created a different dimension in the film.

She even agreed to sign the film Bacchna Aye Haseeno, opposite Ranbir Kapoor who was much younger than her in age. Upcoming stars like Minisha Lamba and Deepika Padukone also acted in the film, but viewers do agree that Bipasha perhaps had provided the most stylish performance in the film. The song “bachna aye haseeno” became super hit.

Even in 2009 Bipasha acted in the film Aa Dekhen Zara opposite Neil Nitin Mukesh, who was quite junior to her. The film had a lot of action sequences. Although Bipasha’s stylish performance was appreciated but the film did not do reasonable business till now.

With huge success in commercial films Bipasha Basu never hesitated to do refined off-beat films like Madhur Bhandarkar’s Corporate. The stress and strain of the corporate world was shown in the film. Also the stories behind the successful careers of CEOs and entrepreneurs were also presented in the film. Critics agree that perhaps Bipasha gave her best performance in the film Corporate.

She even acted in comedy films like Chor Machaye Shor opposite Bobby Deol. Although the film had similar story like that of Amol Palekar’s Golmaal, Bipasha Basu maintained her style in the serio-comic film. Bobby Deol played two characters together in the film.

Even in crime-thrillers like Race, she maintained her style. She was almost killed by the men of Akshay Khanna and her fear, anxiety and other emotions were expressed with style. Her combination with Saif Ali Khan was as powerful as Akshay Khanna’s performance opposite Katrina Kaif in the film.

Bipasha Basu should maintain her stylish andaz in the following films as that is a type of performance which is inherent in her and suits her dialogue delivery and other mannerisms. Viewers expect her to continue the good work in the years to come.

Reema Sen in Golmaal and Phir Hera Pheri.

Reema Sen in Golmaal and Phir Hera Pheri.

Comedy films in the last few years have allowed the unsuccessful actresses to get recognition through the group effort. Golmaal was one of the hit films where Reema Sen got a scope of performing opposite Ajay Devgan, Tushar Kapoor, Arshad Warsi and others.

Tushar Kapoor played the role of a dumb character who could not express himself. All the four friends took shelter in Paresh Rawal’s house as he was blind and thought them to be their grandson. Reema Sen was their neighbor and was liked by the all the four friends. She initially showed irritation about the actors but later one got impressed with their skills.

Each of the friends including Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, hatched up plans to impress Riya Sen in one way or the other sometimes by winning racing car competition or dancing competition, etc. At the end of the film Reema Sen married Tushar Kapoor to everyone’s surprise. The songs “golmaal” became successful.

Reema Sen got a witty role in the film Phir Hera Pheri. She had an affair with Akshay Kumar and got involved in the hera pheri to return the money to be given to the underworld gang. Sunil Shetty got involved with Bipasha Basu, who played the role of a fraud character who promised to get the money of private persons being doubled, and ran away with the money to pay the debts of few wrongdoers.

Reema Sen and Bipasha Basu played a key role when all the characters in the film assembled in a circus to get the diamonds hidden in the place. All the actors including Milind Gunaji, Paresh Rawal, Johnny Lever, etc., did a great job in the circus scene. The acrobatic acts in the circus done by Akshay Kumar and Sunil Shetty entertained the viewers and the film ended up being successful.

Both the films Golmaal and Phir Hera Pheri had impressed the viewers to such an extent that the sequels of the films are under production at the moment. Reema Sen probably got the greatest success in those films (which were related to group effort), but her actual test lies in the films where she can act independently.

The viewers expect Reema Sen to show her unique style in new films to create her separate identity and contribute well in bollywood films.

Happy birthday to Fardeen Khan

Happy birthday to Fardeen Khan.

The viewers of bollywood films wish happy birthday to Fardeen Khan on 8th March, 2009. He had created an identity for himself inspite of being the son of popular bollywood star Feroz Khan. Most of the sons and daughters of the celebrities of bollywood films had always struggled due to comparison of them with their parents.

In case of Fardeen Khan, he never tried to imitate Feroz Khan. Feroz Khan was famous for his stylish performance in action films including Apradh, Dharmatma, Khote Sikke, Qurbani, Jaanbaaz, Yalgaar, etc. In most of these films he introduced Hollywood style of acting in Indian films. Fardeen Khan instead of imitating his father created a simple style of acting which suited different types of films.

His performance in the film No Entry, requires special mention. He played the character of a journalist in the film in the company of Anil Kapoor. He had an affair with Celina Jaitley, but just because he had to save Anil Kapoor, he told a lie to Lara Dutta that Bipasha Basu was his wife.

From that time onwards he just went on telling one lie after the other. He went to Mauritious for honeymoon. Even there he found Anil Kapoor and Lara Dutta and his relationship with Bipasha Basu was revealed. Both Lara Dutta and Celina Jaitley filed divorce suits against Anil Kapoor and Fardeen Khan respectively due to their relationship with Bipasha Basu.

Salman Khan had to come all the way from abroad to save the situation. His playacting with Esha Deol had helped both Fardeen Khan and Anil Kapoor to ease out their relationship with their wives. The film had excellent songs and the comedy sequences appealed to the viewers. The film ended up being a blockbuster.

The other notable films of Fardeen Khan included Bhoot with Urmila Matondkar, Jungle with Urmila Matondkar, etc. The film Jungle was based on the story of Veerappan in the forests of Karnataka where he became a smuggling don. Fardeen Khan’s performance in the film Dev was also worth mentioning.

It is difficult for Fardeen Khan to match the popularity of Salmaan Khan or Shahrukh Khan or Hrithik Roshan in the present time. But even with his limited popularity he has created an identity with which he can be categorized. The viewers expect to explore himself further in bollywood films in future.

Happy birthday to Minissha Lamba

Happy birthday to Minissha Lamba.

The viewers of bollywood films wish happy birthday to Minisha Lamba on 18th January, 2009. She had been a new icon of bollywood films who had become popular during the last year and is about to act in big banner films.

She started her career in bollywood films with the film Yahaan in 2005. It was directed by Sujit Sircar and he was looking for a newcomer at that time. Minisha Lamba created an impression and bagged an important role in Madhur Bhandarkar’s successful film Corporate.

Corporate was based on the complexities faced by the workers and the employers of the corporate world which is crude reality in the metros. Most of the employees in the corporate world become mentally sick with the monotonous work culture and demand of fulfilling targets. Bipasha Basu gave a lifetime performance in the film and Minisha Lamba also was appreciated for her strong performance.

She acted in small budget films like Anthony Kaun Hai, Dus Kahaniya, Honeymoon Travels Kaun Hai and became a regular actress in contemporary films. Then she got a lifetime role in the film Bacchan Aye Haseeno, opposite Ranbir Kapoor. Newcomers in bollywood dream about getting roles under the Yashraj Banner. Minissha Lamba got the role in the very early part of her career.

Bacchna Aye Haseeno was the story of Ranbir Kapoor who had met three different girls in his life and each of the girls had a great influence on his character. He had different experiences with Minisha Lamba, Bipasha Basu and Deepika Padukone and all the experiences eventually shaped his character. Minnisha Lamba gave able lips in the song “ki mujhe pyar hai” composed by Vishal Shekhar in the film. The music of the film was very impressive with hit songs like “bacchna aye haseeno”, and other songs.

In 2008, Minisha Lamba also acted in an important character in the action film Kidnap. She played the role of the daughter of Sanjay Dutt was lived separately from her mother due to differences between each other. Imran Khan, the relative of Amir Khan, kidnapped her and asked for heavy ransom from her father Sanjay Dutt.

Although Sanjay Dutt did not fulfill any of the father’s responsibilities till the call of kidnapper was made, his influence in the society was used for releasing his daughter. He took the call of Imran Khan as a challenge and the rest of the film involved the struggle of Sanjay Dutt in bringing Khan to task.

Minissha Lamba was sublime in the film and showed signs of a matured actress. With a number of new actresses like Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor, Asin, increasing the competition amongst heroines, Minisha Lamba has a challenging task of maintaining her stardom and do even better in the new films in future.

Shahrukh Khan's projection of bollywood history in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.

Shahrukh Khan’s projection of bollywood history in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.

In the film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, there was a dance sequence where Shahrukh Khan along with Anushka Sharma, showed the style of dance performances propagated by the leading stars of bollywood over the years.

Composer Salim Sulaiman composed the tunes for the modernized version of the legendary songs and Sonu Nigam sang them after representing the style of singing of all the stalwarts of the different decades. Shahrukh Khan showed the style of Raj Kapoor with a costume that the showman wore in the film Shree 420, while Kajol showed the style of Nargis. The form of the dance presentation was related to the era of Raj Kapoor, although the mannerism was evolved by Shahrukh Khan.

Dev Anand’s style was also depicted by Shahrukh Khan with Bipasha Basu playing the part of both Nutan and Sadhna. The songs included some of the hit songs of Dev during the 50s, 60s. Shammi Kapoor’s rock and roll style was also displayed with Helen’s performance replicated by Lara Dutta. Someway or the other the music of Shankar Jaikishan could not be matched or replicated.

Rajesh Khanna’s style was also depicted by Shahrukh Khan with Preeti Zinta depicting the mannerisms of Sharmila Tagore. Also Rishi Kapoor’s mannerisms were shown by Shahrukh Khan with Rani Mukherjee playing the part played by Neetu Singh. The producers, directors, choreographers of the film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi claim that the selections of actresses were based with their similarity with the stars of the different ages.

But in respect of conveying the message of domination of the respective stars of the different periods of time, there were lot of disparity. Firstly performances of giants like Dilip Kumar in the 50s, Joy Mukherjee or Biswajeet in the 60s, Amitabh Bacchan in the 70s were not found in the show.

Secondly as far as actresses were concerned very significantly the powerful dancers of the 50s and 60s were not shown at all like Vaijayantimala, or Asha Parekh, or Wahida Rehman. In fact, most of the dance sequences of the golden age, especially the 50s and 60s were dependant on the sheer brilliance of Vaijayantimala, Wahida Rehman, Rajashree, Mumtaz, etc., as most of the actors other than Shammi Kapoor and Jeetender were not specialized in dancing in serious sense of the term.

Another thing that is evident was that Shahrukh Khan could not create any magic out of the dance sequence relating to bollywood history, the way he amazed the viewers with his dance sequence in Om Shanti Om. In that film, he danced with all the leading stars of golden age and modern age like Dharmender, Jeetender, Rekha, Shabana Azmi and Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Bobby Deol, etc.

The film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi had done moderate business and could not match the expectation of viewers who were used to see Shahrukh Khan’s blockbusters like Kabi Alvida Na Kehna, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, etc.

Happy birthday to Bipasha Basu.

Happy birthday to Bipasha Basu.

The viewers of bollywood films wish very happy birthday to Bipasha Basu, India’s Angelina Jolie. She has been one of the most sought after models who had become indispensable in bollywood films in the last few years.

When she initially joined bollywood films in Ajnabee with Akshay Kumar, Bobby Deol, Kareena Kapoor, her smartness and aggressive performance was discussed amongst producers and directors. With passage of time new producers found similarity of Hollywood stars like Angelina Jolie and Sofia Lorrain and started giving her roles which were both bold and beautiful.

She was considered an art-film actress after her restrained performance in Madhur Bhandarkar’s off-beat project Corporate. Her hit films include Ajnabee, Bacchna Aye Haseeno, Race, etc.

She had bagged the award for the most stylish icon last year in 2008, during a year when other bollywood stars like Aishwarya Rai, Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra had stormed bollywood films with their stylish performances and westernized dress-ups.

Although the complexion of Bipasha Basu was darkish, her looks were unique and that was the reason she was used by directors of different dimensions. In films like Dhoom 2, where Aishwarya Rai showed challenging stunts opposite Hrithik Roshan, Bipasha Basu complimented Abhishek Bacchan in the film with her smart performance. Till date she had performed in more stylish roles than tradional characters.

It did not matter to her that she had not been identified as romantic stars like Preeti Zinta, or Rani Mukherjee or Kareena Kapoor, who had ruled bollywood films for the last 5 years, as long as her performance in contemporary films were appreciated and her films did brilliant business in India and abroad.

Even with increase of age, viewers had to accept her presence in films in 2008, like Bacchna Aye Haseeno, where she had performed opposite younger stars like Deepika Padukone and Minissha Lamba. In an interview before a private channel Ranbir Kapoor mentioned that Bipasha Basu was the most matured actress who had acted opposite her in his short career. Beyond style and dance performances she had very strong acting conception which had still kept her in the rat race.

The viewers expect her to continue her brilliant work in bollywood films and show more dynamism in future.

Happy birthday to Deepika Padukone

Happy birthday to Deepika Padukone

The viewers of bollywood films wish happy birthday to Deepika Padukone on 5th January, 2009. Deepika Padukone, the daughter of renowned badminton player Prakash Padukone, started her career in the fashion world from where the producers and directors got impressed.

She made a dream debut in the film Om Shanti Om, opposite Shahrukh Khan. Shahrukh Khan was one of the biggest icons of bollywood films till 2007. These days Akshay Kumar had shaken up the box-office domination of Shahrukh Khan after giving many blockbusters in the lat few years. It was a dream come true for Deepika Padukone to act opposite Shahrukh Khan in the romantic blockbuster. Farah Khan and Shahrukh Khan searched a new face for the film. Deepika Padukone answered their query.

The film was related to reincarnation. Deepika Padukone and Shahrukh Khan had double roles in the film. Deepika was killed by breaking out of fire in a grand studio. The entire story of her death was recreated to bring the perpetrators of crime before the people at large. The soul of Deepika Padukone did the rest.

The film had similar story line like that of Karz. But the excellent music of the film and decent performance from Deepika Padukone and Shahrukh Khan had converted a decent film into a commercially successful mission. The songs of Sonu Nigam and others like “tumko paya hai to jaise”, “om shanty om”, “ankho me teri”, etc., became landmark hits in 2007.

Deepika Padukone bagged the best debutant award in the filmfare and Om Shanti Om bagged filmfare awards under different categories. As Deepika Padukone created a huge expectation from the performance in the first film the viewers started believing in her capability in the following films as well.

She did well again in 2008 in the film Bacchna Aye Haseeno opposite Ranbir Kapoor, Minissha Lamba and Bipasha Basu. The film was related to the story of how Ranbir Kapoor met three girls namely Bipasha Basu, Deepika Padukone and Minissha Lamba and how their interaction created an impact in the life of Ranbir Kapoor.

Again the fabulous locations and quality music composed by Vishal Shekhar impressed the viewers. The hit songs included “bacchna aye haseeno”, “ki mujhe pyar hai”, etc. Deepika Padukone probably matched Ranbir Kapoor the best if compared with the other performers in the same film.

In 2009, Deepika’s much awaited film Chandni Chowk To China will be released in January. She had acted opposite superstar Akshay Kumar who had shown his action skills and comedy skills as well in the film. For the requirement of the film Deepika Padukone had learned martial art as well which was done by Priyanka Chopra in the past.

The viewers expect Deepika Padukone to continue her great work in the years to come in bollywood films and other films.

Bipasha Basu - the style icon of bollywood

Bipasha Basu – the style icon of bollywood

Bipasha Basu got the award for the best style icon of bollywood films in Lux Sabse Popular Kaun award at the end of 2008. She had acted in films like Race, Bacchna Aye Haseeno, and her performance in those films had led the viewers decide on her stylish acting.

Although age sometimes stands in the way of veteran performers especially in the entertainment industry, the recognition in the form most popular style icon gives the impression that some of the artists had not lost their box-office popularity. It had happened in the case of Bipasha Basu.

Those who had viewed the film Race will agree that Bipasha Basu faced the challenge of the junior actresses like Katrina Kaif and Sameera Reddy in the same film. Both of the actresses were younger than Bipasha Basu and in that sense had more acceptability before the younger producers and directors. Katrina Kaif specifically had a dream run in the last three years with success in one film or other including Welcome, Namaste London, Singh is Kinng, etc.

Inspite of all the odd factors, Bipasha Basu emerged as the most stylish performer in the film Race. She had the inclination of following the style of Sofia Lorrain of Hollywood films in the early part of her career as her get up matched with the oscar winning actress of Hollywood.

Later on with passing of time, she had developed her versatility in performance to create her own acting style. That was evident in rural roles like the one played in the film Omkara opposite Vivek Oberoi and Saif Ali Khan. She showed her acting skills along with performances in item numbers like “beeri jalai le”, etc.

In Bacchna Aye Haseeno, she had acted opposite Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Minissha Lamba who were much younger than her. Yet her performance had impressed the viewers of bollywood films and she had kept her mark.

She never looked out of place opposite the young performers. As the story was related to the influence of the three girls in the lives of the young man played by Ranbir Kapoor, Bipasha’s influence was equally material in the film like Minissha Lamba and Deepika Padukone.

In 2009, the viewers expect even better performance from the style icon in bollywood films of modern producers and directors.

Deepika Padukone has a real challenge ahead.

Deepika Padukone has a real challenge ahead.

The music composed by Vishal Shekhar became super hit and the foreign locations attracted viewers all across the country. The hit songs included “bacchna aye haseeno”, “mujhe pyar hai”, etc.

After the success in that film Minissha did extremely well in the film Kidnap. She played the role of the daughter of Sanjay Dutt who had divorced her mother. Imran Khan played the role of kidnapper in the film.

Has Bipasha Basu lost her popularity over the years?

Has Bipasha Basu lost her popularity over the years?

Bipasha Basu
Bipasha Basu created a huge impact on bollywood films with her challenging performances in the film Dhoom 2, Ajnabee, etc. Initially her similarity with Sofia Lorain was prioritized by bollywood producers and directors and after showing her consistency of performance she became one of the leading actresses till last two years. But somehow or the other her magic is not working to that extent in the recent year. So viewers do wonder has the popularity of Bipasha Basu decreased over the years?

If her successful films are analyzed it will be seen that she had created her stardom in unconventional roles. In the film Ajnabee, she was not a villain in technical terms. She had an affair with Akshay Kumar and pretended to be friends of Kareena Kapoor and Bobby Deol. In the second half of the film she was seen by the viewers being involved in a murder conspiracy with Akshay Kumar. Ultimately she was killed in a tassle between Bobby Deol and Akshay Kumar. All the songs in the film were successful and Bipasha Basu even gave good lips in some of the songs. Neither she played the role of the main heroine like Kareena Kapoor nor she was a villain like Helen.

Bipasha Basu
Similarly in No Entry she got the most challenging role. She tried to get clients like Anil Kapoor and wanted to spend a night with them after getting payment for her work. She created a misunderstanding between Anil Kapoor and his wife Lara Dutta and Fardeen Khan and his wife Celina Jaitley. It led to filing of divorce by Lara Dutta and Celina Jaitley. At the end of the film one of the bartenders told Salman Khan that Bipasha’s husband was hospitalized and she required crores of rupees for his treatment, That was the reason why she was involved in those types of unlawful activities. She got appreciation for her challenging performance. Her lips in the song “no no no no no no no no no entry” set the momentum for the film.

Even in the film Race, she got a challenging role of hatching up a plan with Saif Ali Khan, to trap his brother Akshay Khanna. Saif Ali Khan pretended to be dead and the truth relating to his survival was only known by Bipasha Basu. Akshay Khanna had an affair with Katrina Kaif and in the real race of life Saif Ali Khan superseded Akshay Khanna with th help of Bipasha Basu. The song in the film “pehli nazar me aisa jadu kar diya” became landmark hit in the early part of 2008.

Bipasha Basu
But after that Bipasha Basu could not make any significant impact on bollywood viewers. She got mixed responses for her performance in the film Bacchna Aye Haseeno, where she acted opposite Ranbir Kapoor. With the appearance of new actresses like Minisha Lamba, Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif and other successful actresses of bollywood, Bipasha Basu is facing very serious competition.

She has an uphill task of maintaining her stardom and also matching her own performance in films like Corporate. The viewers wish her good luck at the end of 2008.
