Geeta Dutt was probably the most successful playback singer of bollywood films after Lata Mangeshkar in the 50s and 60s. She had sung for all the leading singers of the period including Madhubala, Meena Kumari, Wahida Rehman and others.

Geeta Dutt was extremely successful in Bengali films as well. Her song “tumi je amar” sung in the film Harano Sur for Suchitra Sen became the greatest hit of the 50s. The song was played in Uttam Kumar’s film Harano Sur a number of times by the director Ajoy Kar and was used to bring back the memory of Uttam Kumar who lost it in an accident.

Geeta Dutt’s songs “ogo shundara”, “jhanak jhanak madhur badhon baaje” and “nir choto khoti nei” composed by Nochiketa Ghosh and picturised on Suchitra Sen in the film Indrani stormed the bollywood viewers in 1958. The film became super hit and songs became timeless hits.

Suchitra Sen and Geeta Dutt combination again struck gold in the film Hospital. The song “ei shundor sharnali shondhay” became super hit in the film. Very Geeta Dutt suited Suchitra Sen as well as Sandhya Mukherjee’s voice. Both Geeta Dutt and Sandhya Mukherjee used to be considered the most popular singers of the golden age, the 50s and 60s.

Geeta Dutt’s other hit songs in Bengali films include “amar duti chokhe” and “ei mayabi tithi” sung in Uttam Kumar’s film Sonar Horin. The songs were picturised on the actress Namita Sinha. Geeta Dutt’s song “kacher chirir chotay” composed by Sudhin Dasgupta and picturised on Sabitri Chatterji became super hit in 1958. It was song in Agragami’s epic film Dakharkara where Kali Banerjee played the role of his life.

Happy birthday to Rishi Kapoor.

Happy birthday to Rishi Kapoor.

The viewers of bollywood films wish happy birthday to Rishi Kapoor on 4th September 2009. He had remained as one of the most romantic actors that bollywood had ever produced.

He started his career as a child artist in Raj Kapoor’s film Mera Naam Joker. He stormed bollywood films with his romantic performance in the film Bobby in 1973. The film did great business and Rishi Kapoor received the filmfare award for the best actor for his performance in Bobby.

From that time onwards Rishi Kapoor remained one the most romantic actors in bollywood films. His films Amar Akbar Anthony in 1977, Laila Majnu in 1977 and Sargam in 1978 were the greatest musical blockbusters of the 70s. The songs composed by Laxmikant Pyarellal, Jaidev and Madanmohan in these films became everlasting hits. The notable songs of Rafi and Lata in this film included “koel boli”, “parda hai parda”, “dafliwale”, “barbad muhobbat ki dua”, “is reshmi pazeeb”, to name a few.

Rishi Kapoor’s extraordinary capability of giving lips in these songs separated him from other actors of that era. His films Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai, Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahi and Karz created history. He showed his dancing skills in every type of songs of Rafi and Kishore including “hai aga dushman zamana”, “bacchna aye haseeno”, “dared dil”, “om shanty om”, “puchona yaar kya hua”, to name a few. RD Burman and Laxmikant Pyarellal probably gave their best music to Rishi Kapoor in the 70s and 80s.

In the 80s, Rishi Kapoor’s films Duniya, Sitamgar, Saagar, Chandni, Cooli, Naseeb, did fantastic business. In fact due to presence of Rishi Kapoor, producers and directors created romantic stories during an era when Big B, Vinod Khanna, Shatrughun Sinha dominated bollywood with action films. Even in the 90s, Rishi Kapoor’s films Bol Radha Bol, Damini, etc., were appreciated by the audience.

After the debut of his son Ranbir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor switched to character roles. In 2009 also Rishi Kapoor did well in films like Dilli 6.

Films like God Tussi Great Ho has strong message.

Films like God Tussi Great Ho has strong message.

Films like God Tussi Great Ho has very strong message embedded in them. The director Rumy Jaffery came up with a very innovative subject. Salman Khan had been shown as a hardworking person whose efforts go in vain due to mistakes of other persons. Where as his friend Priyanka Chopra’s efforts, get rewarded.

Salman Khan had spoke to God played by Big B, and said that the prayers of the common man never reach him. He said that Salman Khan had been scope of playing the role of God for few days. He used his powers to make Sohail Khan, his competitor speak rubbish before the lie detector when a corrupted minister was interviewed by Sohail Khan.

But Salman Khan never understood that if he fulfilled the wishes of every human being on earth it could lead to chaos. He fulfilled the dreams of prisoners to escape from jail, he fulfilled the dream of beggar to behave like dog, he fulfilled the dream of Sohail Khan to marry Priyanka Chopra, he fulfilled the dream of Rajpal Yadav to marry his sister.

Due to Salman Khan’s mistakes the entire earth became full of unrest. Salman Khan understood could only the limited wishes of men and women. God knew the right balance which could not be understood by human beings. So the mess that was created by Salman Khan was brought back to order by God.

The film gave the right the message, that unlimited desires cannot be fulfilled. Salman Khan’s serio-comic performance with Sohail Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Anupam Kher and others made people laugh. The songs in the film became successful as well like “tujhe aksa beech ghumadun”, to name a few. The music was composed by Sajid Wajid.

The viewers expect Salman Khan to come with more films having strong social messages.

Ranbir Kapoor was very impressive in Bacchna Aye Haseeno.

Ranbir Kapoor was very impressive in Bacchna Aye Haseeno.

Ranbir Kapoor, being the son of superstar Rishi Kapoor and grandson of Showman Raj Kapoor had a lot to prove when he made his debut with the film Sawaariya. The beginning was not that brilliant if compared with Rishi Kapoor’s Bobby.

But Ranbir Kapoor bounced back with his majestic performance in the film Bacchna Aye Haseeno. The story of the young man getting involved with three girls namely Minissha Lamba, Bipasha Basu and Deepika Padukone. He almost cheated Minisha Lamba after spending a night with her in Switzerland and did not marry Bipasha knowing her to be a grand model.

But in the case of Deepika Padukone, he loved her and wanted to marry her inspite of knowing that she was a taxi-driver in Sydney. But later on Deepika herself realized that she loved Ranbir and decided to marry him at last. It was difficult to match the elegance of the three actresses Minisha Lamba, Bipasha Basu and Deepika Padukone in the film, but Ranbir Kapoor did it in style.

But the portion where Ranbir Kapoor went back to India to say sorry to Minisha and Bipasha, was very appealing. He showed the signs of a matured actor and had lot of similarity in dialogue throwing with Rishi Kapoor. He worked as servant of Bipasha to show that he was repentant about his own act. He showed the exuberance of a young man and also the calmness of a person who realizes and feels his mistakes made in life.

The music of Vishal Shekhar was classic, with hit songs like “khuda jain”, “ahista ahista”, “bacchna aye haseeno”, etc. Ranbir Kapoor has all the signs of a popular star and viewers can expect him to carry on the legacy of Raj Kapoor and Prithviraj Kapoor, along with Kareena Kapoor.

Ranbir Kapoor had shown in Bacchna Aye Haseeno that he can dance, he is equipped to play the role of characters who are born and brought up abroad. The viewers are looking forward to his performance in the new film Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahaani in 2009.

Between Dilip Kumar and Naushad and Raj Kapoor and Shankar Jaikishan which combination was more deadly?

Between Dilip Kumar and Naushad and Raj Kapoor and Shankar Jaikishan which combination was more deadly?

Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor still remain the most popular actors of bollywood cinema in the last 70 years. One of the reasons of their immense success includes the superlative class of music being given to the giant actors by Naushad and Shankar Jaikishan.

Naushad gave classic tunes to Dilip Kumar in the films Uran Khatola, Kohinoor, Mughal-I-Azam, Leader, Dil Diya Dard Liya, Ram Aur Shyam, Aadmi, to name a few. Rafi and Shakeel Badayani were the other players in the deadly combination. Rafi’s songs for Dilip Kumar like “madhuban me radhika nachere”, “woh dur ke musafir”, “tere husn ki kya taarif karun”, “koi sagar dil ko behlata nahi”, “dilruba maine tere pyar me kya kya na kiya”, “aaj purani rahon se koi mujhe awaaz na den”, remain one of the greatest creations of all times. If Naushad was unparallel as a composer, Shakeel Badayani was unparallel as a lyricist, Rafi was matchless as singer and Dilip Kumar matchless as an actor.

Producer director Raj Kapoor was the closest competitor of Dilip Kumar during the 40s, 50s and 60s. In fact both the giants had acted together in the film Andaz in 1949. Raj Kapoor’s deadly combination with Shankar Jaikishan had produced super hit films like Barsaat, Aah, Awara, Shree 40, Chori Chori, Anari, Jis Desh Me Ganga Behti Hai, Sangam, to name a few. The music of those films were equally popular and successful. Songs of Mukesh and Manna Dey like “ramaiya vasta maiya”, “mur murk e na dekh”, “sab kuch humne”, “yeh raat bheegi bheegi”, “o mehbooba”, “dost dost na raha” had not lost their flavor even after 50 years of their creation. Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra as lyricists completed the complete chain of master creators. As Raj Kapoor had other qualities besides acting including production, direction, editing, etc., he is considered the greatest showman of all times even today.

It is impossible to say whether Dilip Kumar’s combination with Naushad was greater than Raj Kapoor’s combination with Shankar Jaikishan, but it is true that the two giants had left assets for generations to cherish which had ended up being masterpieces. New actors, composers, singers, directors learn from the success of the Showman and Tragedy King and the works should be revisited.

The other characters in the film who got involved in the entire plan of action include Mithun Chakravarty, Danny, Shruti Hassan (daughter of Kamal Hassan), Ravi Kissen and others.

Sanjay Dutt was brilliant in the film in the role of mafia don Mussa, just like other action films. Mithun Chakravarty in his role of Retired Colonol Veer Pratap Singh used his experience in bollywood films to portray his reserve character. Imran Khan was outstanding in his role of Ram Mehra. He exhibited his confusion in the early part of the film very well and then substantiated it with confidence. Danny was brilliant as well.

Viewers will enjoy the performance of Shruti Hassan, who was impressive too. Ravi Kissen and Rati Agnihotri did well in their respective roles. The music of Salim Sulaiman was impressive with the hit song “aasma”.

On the whole the film should do very good business.

Her films with Raj Kapoor titled Diwana and Dev Anand titled Par Muhabbat did good business mainly due to hit music of Shankar Jaikishan. The songs of those films including “ai sanam jisne tujhe chaand si surat di hai”, “dil ki awaz khuda khair Karen” still remain the landmarks of Indian film music. Even Saira Banu’s comedy films like Parosan opposite Sunil Dutt, Kishore Kumar and Mehmood did brilliant business.

From the mid-70s Saira Banu faded away from the industry before acting in films opposite Big B like Zameer and Hera Pheri. The viewers expect her to contribute in bollywood films in character roles again.
